2014 MD Governor's Cup Competition Winners Announced

Over 100 Wines from Across the State Competed for Prestigious Award

August 25, 2014 (Baltimore, MD) – Today, the Maryland Wineries Association announced the winners of the 26th Annual Maryland Governor’s Cup Competition for 2014. The judging for the prestigious awards took place on Sunday, August 17 in Timonium with over twenty wine experts from the region who tasted over 100 different wines, including sparkling, whites, roses and reds.  The gold medal-winning wines competed for Best in Class and Best in Show honors. Bordeleau Vineyard & Winery won the Governor’s Cup Best in Show for its Cabernet Sauvignon Amarone Style 2008, a wine that is made from 100% estate Cabernet and produced with partially dried grapes in the Italian tradition. The grapes were grown at Bordeleau’s vineyard in Eden, Wicomico County, south of Salisbury. This is the first time that the Governor’s Cup “Best in Show” has been awarded to a winery from Maryland’s Eastern Shore.
Owner and winemaker Tom Shelton is thrilled with the recognition. “This is a big deal and quite a prestigious honor,” said Shelton. “Wineries strive to earn this award and this is the second Best in Show honor in less than a month, so we are simply thrilled.“
Joe Fiola, Ph.D., University of Maryland Viticulturist and Small Fruit Specialist was excited to see unique blends getting recognized for their quality. “Both the white and red blends were phenomenal this year."
Competition Director Al Spoler was impressed by the overall quality of submissions, especially from the newest wineries. “There were top wines from brand new wineries,” said Spoler. “This continues to prove that Maryland wineries are making world-class wines.“
