Tin Lizzie Wineworks Offers Turn-Key Winemaking Located in Howard County, Tin Lizzie Wineworks isn’t a vineyard, nor is it a winery, per se—it is a wine making school. According to the presiding Tin Lizzie professor, Dave Zuchero, he has been making wine “from daddy’s knee.”
Zuchero gained a degree in Microbiology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and went on to be a student in the first graduating winemaking class from UC-Davis.
“After gaining all of this winemaking knowledge, I wanted to bring it to Maryland,” says Zuchero, “there are other winemaking schools on the east coast, but it is still a relatively new concept here.”
Tin Lizzie—named after the red 1915 model T4 found on the sprawling 150-acre farm—prides itself in locating whatever grape an individual is interested in. It is a fully equipped production winery that custom crafts its wine.
“We find the grapes to match the style of wine you want to make, and we work with the individual every step of the way. We develop your wine with you,” says Zuchero, “My favorite part of the entire winemaking process is the party that takes place at every step. It’s not just about making wine, the learning atmosphere is fun.”
Tin Lizzie offers separate winemaking packages and can make one fourth, one half, or a full barrel of wine. It opened its doors last fall, and future plans include growing its own grapes and becoming a commercial winery.
“Our goal is to find the best grapes and use the best equipment to produce the best self-made wine possible," says Zuchero. "We want help you produce a wine that you will be happy to enjoy and share with others.”
Zuchero and partners are investigating adding a commercial winery to Tin Lizzie Wineworks line-up in the future.
