MD Wineries Win Big at Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition

Once again, Maryland wines are bringing in the awards!  Most recently, Maryland wineries had numerous winning entries at the Fifth Annual Atlantic Seaboard Wine Competition. The winning entries included: Black Ankle Vineyards, Elk Run Vineyards, Bordeleau Vineyards, Sugarloaf Mountain Vineyard, Basignani Winery, and Heimbuch Estate Vineyards. All together, Maryland wineries received multiple gold, silver, and bronze medals, along with a best of category award. See the results.

Tin Lizzie Wineworks Offers Turn-Key Winemaking

Located in Howard County, Tin Lizzie Wineworks isn’t a vineyard, nor is it a winery, per se—it is a wine making school.  According to the presiding Tin Lizzie professor, Dave Zuchero, he has been making wine “from daddy’s knee.”

Zuchero gained a degree in Microbiology from Indiana University of Pennsylvania, and went on to be a student in the first graduating winemaking class from UC Davis. Read more online.

ShoreVines Encourages Vineyard Plantings

A combination of “family farms” looking to diversify and a significant group of new “entrepreneur” growers has fueled a "pioneer" movement in the planting of vineyards on the Upper Eastern Shore of Maryland. With the current demand for grapes, good potential profitability per acre, and the “romanticized aura” of wine growing, the trend is expected to develop into economic opportunity and sustainable agri-businesses. Chesapeake Wine Trail– Highlighting the Wineries of MD's Eastern Shore

Franchot Toasts to Good News About MD Wine. While not immune to the national recession, Maryland’s wine industry is expanding.The number of wineries in the state has doubled in the past four years, and they now support 350 jobs that pay a total of nearly $11 million in annual salaries, according to Comptroller Peter Franchot.

New research published in the August 2009 print issue of The FASEB Journal, not only explains resveratrol's one-two punch on inflammation, but also shows how it—or a derivative—can be used to treat potentially deadly inflammatory disease, such as appendicitis, peritonitis, and systemic sepsis.

First Unsulfered Sparkling Wine Debuts.Drappier Champagne has released the first unsulfured bubbly - Brut Nature Zéro Dosage Sans Souffre NV, a Blanc de Noirs. Sulfur has been added to wines for centuries but Drappier believes it is not necessary if the fruit is very high-quality and certain vinification techniques are used.
